Every year, the school holds a Kitchen Safety Poster Contest. Students are asked to produce an image that reminds their fellow cooks of the dangers around them. This year attracted a record fourteen entries. Here are the highlights.
Third place: “Hot Is Hot”
This poster, by a first year named Biscotti, shows a stove with a large red circle around it. Underneath is the message: “THIS IS HOT.” The judges praised its clarity, though one noted that the stove was drawn to look friendly.
Second place: “Do Not Lick the Blender”
This poster, by Tarragon, depicts a blender with a tongue approaching it and a large cross. It was accompanied by a short poem.
The blender is spinning. The blender is cruel. The tongue is a victim. Be nobody’s fool.
The judges felt the poem was uneven but sincere.
First place: “Count Your Whiskers”
By Clementine, this entry shows a cat peering into an oven and then withdrawing with fewer whiskers than she began with. It carries the message: “Check before you lean.” It was widely admired for its realism and for the fact that the artist had clearly leaned.
Honourable mentions
- “No Running with Soup,” which depicts a soup, running
- “The Floor Is Not Clean,” a plain white poster with a single dirty footprint
- “Do Not Eat the Raw Chicken That You Did Not Cook,” the longest title ever submitted
The disqualification
One entry was disqualified. It consisted of a drawing of a cucumber with the caption “He is coming.” The judges ruled that it did not promote safety so much as panic. The artist, who has asked to remain anonymous, has been offered counselling and a snack.
Safety reminder
This blog is a parody. In a real kitchen, please keep pets away from hot surfaces, sharp tools and cleaning products, and follow the advice of real safety authorities.
Next year
The theme will be “Fire: A Reflection.” We hope to see you there, and to see your whiskers intact.
